Vasart Paperweights YX001-0020

Ysart ‘Y’ cane - used at least in 1946-56 period

The use of the ‘Y’ cane is attributed to Salvador Ysart, an attribution I first heard in 1989, see Ysartnews 5. If anyone is aware of the source of this attribution please let us know.

These weights appear to be all by the same hand and differ in some respects from other Vasart weights. It is of course, possible that they were being made before the Vasart period while the Ysart’s were still at Moncrieff in the 1930’s. At least one of the ‘Y’ weights has been found with a cane matching those found on the Vasart canes page. Please refer to KevH’s site on the links page for details of ongoing research.

Contributions: If you have some weights that you would like to share with the collecting community through these pages. Please provide at the minimum a JPG picture of high resolution and a picture of any marks or label, plus height and diameter. Ideally we would additionally like photos showing the profile and base views and how they all fluoresce under Long Wave Ultra Violet light (UV LW) and Short Wave Violet light (UV SW). This will improve everyones knowledge and possibly the methods of dating.

A recently discovered ink bottle finally gives a clear period to the use of the Y cane. Shown here as YX004, this piece contains two Y canes and is signed “Vasart” under the base.

The weight previously number YX001 has been moved to Ysart Brothers period as YB014
